77 Burmese arrested in Malaysia

Penang : police detained 77 illegal Burmese workers during a four-hour operation that began at 8am today.

The workers are men between the ages of 19 and 23, said Supt Hatta Md Zin, head of the South West Police Department. “Parked at Pulau Betong; "Fishermen saw them crossing from the anchored ship," he told reporters.

2 of those arrested had refugee IDs issued by UNHCR. According to the investigation, there were 115 Burmese nationals on the ship, the police officer said.

The police said they are hunting for the remaining 38 who are believed to be hiding in the forest. Those arrested were detained at the Southwest Police Station before being handed over to the Immigration Department.
